The future of physics isn't only in the realm of quantum mechanics and high energy physics. Physicists are needed as problem solvers in many engineering, applicative, situations. Take the Ocean Cleanup, for example.
This company aims to (through private enterprise!) clean up the majority of the world's oceans of plastic waste within the next 20 years. They use a massive floating bow/arm on the surface (that will collect plastic on the surface) that is 'anchored' a few hundred meters below the surface to a slower flowing water current (not to the sea floor).
This brilliant idea took the knowledge in fluid dynamics and computer modelling of motion of plastics at different depths and the collaboration of hundreds of people over many years.
Check out their twitter account. They've just set out with their test run, and shortly after that they'll be ready to deploy.
30,000+ private donations later, and many many worldwide CEO's investing in this. Good luck Boyan and team 😃
